Trying to help and getting kicked in the teeth
About a month ago I created a post to challenge Texas drivers to set November 6, 2025 as the day no one is killed on Texas highways. I also invited other states to be involved. Kansas, Missouri, New Mexico and Nebraska all accepted. The post has been viewed more than 12 thousand times. I created a short 3 minute video explaining the challenge and posted it on YouTube. The video has been viewed just over 12 hundred times and analytics show most that watched the video were still watching after 40 seconds.
I spent a significant amount of time writing, creating the video and posting it on three social media platforms. You would not believe the hate mail I received from just challenging drivers to make a personal commitment to accept the challenge and to pass the message on to those you care about. I knew the endeavor would be difficult, but I thought the attempt would be well received. Wow was I wrong. One of the comments on a social platform questioned my personal resolve. One contributor asked how many black people have I killed, how much money and drugs have I stolen. I just do not understand our world today. It appears being a keyboard warrior you can say or do anything you want. It truly does not matter the intent of your message.
My Substack friends do you ever get the feeling that many do not care about anything. Attack, deflect and accuse seems to be the modus operandi of those who spew hate at every turn. My friends, all I really want to do is make a difference. Vehicle and driver safety is my wheelhouse. I know what I am talking about. I have pulled kids out of wreckages, arrested drunk drivers who just took the lives of innocent people who were just trying to get home. I have witnessed crash scenes where the vehicles were unidentifiable due to the speed of one or both vehicles. I have read posts from police officers describing gut wrenching events where death notifications were required. I have experienced many of those as well. I have prayed, cried, made coffee, baby bottles, and attempted to assist the family in their time of grief.
With all that said, I wanted to see if by setting a date, just one day where every driver that took to the road was totally engaged and focused on the operation of their vehicle. I am retired and not required to deliver death notifications any longer. However, there are many police officers out there that are still doing the thankless job. It would be an amazing accomplishment to have one death free day on our nations highways.
I want to quit, but have not given up just yet. We are one month from Zero Day. The November 6th challenge is still ongoing. I am going to ask that if you do not know about this see the Substack post titled, “Accept the challenge” There is a link to the video in that op-ed. Please watch the video, accept the challenge and pass the challenge on to your loved ones. This is the only way to prevent that knock on your door.
